This whetstone combo is built for proper knife maintenance and refinement, not heavy repair work.

It includes a practical grit progression centred around 1000 and 6000 grit, which is widely used for maintaining already sharp or slightly dulled knives. The 1000 grit is a medium stone that restores a tired edge and brings it back to sharp, but it is not aggressive enough for heavily blunt or damaged knives. The 6000 grit refines and smooths the edge, improving cutting feel and reducing resistance.

It is important to understand what this kit is, and what it is not.

This is not a repair kit for heavily damaged or extremely dull knives. Very dull edges, chips, or edge damage require a coarse stone in the 200 to 400 grit range to remove material quickly and reset the edge geometry.

Instead, this combo excels at regular maintenance and edge refinement.

To keep your stones performing correctly, the combo includes a Suehiro 100 grit flattening stone. Whetstones wear over time and must be kept flat to produce consistent, accurate edges.

Control during sharpening is handled by the Naniwa stone holder, which keeps the stone stable, and the Naniwa angle guide, which helps maintain a consistent angle while you sharpen.

The process is finished with the Tojiro leather strop, used to remove the remaining burr and clean up the edge after sharpening. This step improves sharpness without removing additional material.
